What is hemp oil?

Choosing the right oil for you and your pet

What oils are safe for your pet?

Oils are a great way to take a daily dose of CBD because they have a high absorption rate which makes them the most effective CBD product.

Duo Senses has three versions of CBD oils: Essentials, Duo Blends, and Pet Oils. All of the Duo Senses CBD oils are safe for both human and pet consumption.

Types of CBD

Broad Spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD is a type of cannabidiol (CBD) extract derived from the hemp plant that contains a wide range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds, without tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Unlike full-spectrum CBD, which includes trace amounts below the legal limit (0.3%) of THC, broad-spectrum CBD aims to provide the potential therapeutic benefits of multiple hemp compounds without the psychoactive effects associated with THC. Next to full spectrum CBD, this broad-spectrum CBD is most popular among individuals because of the "entourage effect." The combined effects of various cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically for enhanced therapeutic outcomes is what is considered the entourage effect. Broad-spectrum CBD oils and topicals offer a comprehensive approach to wellness, potentially helping with various conditions such as pain, inflammation, anxiety, and sleep patterns.

Broad Spectrum CBD extract can be found in the Essentials and Duo Blends Oils.

Full Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD is a type of cannabidiol extract derived from the hemp plant that contains a comprehensive range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds, including trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but still within the legal limit of 0.3%. This type of CBD, just like broad-spectrum CBD, aims to harness the "entourage effect," where the synergistic interaction of various hemp compounds enhances the therapeutic potential of each component. While THC is present, it is not in amounts sufficient to induce psychoactive effects (in other words, there is not enough THC to make you have a ‘high’ effect). Full-spectrum CBD is believed to provide a broader spectrum of potential health benefits compared to isolated CBD, as the diverse array of compounds may work together to address conditions such as pain, inflammation, anxiety, and more.

Full Spectrum CBD extract can be found in the pet oils. The pet oils have been branded for pet consumption, however, they are also safe for human consumption.

CBG Isolate

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. Known as the "stem cell" or "parent cannabinoid," CBG is like an ancestor to other cannabinoids like CBD and THC. Despite being present in smaller amounts compared to more well-known cannabinoids, CBG is gaining attention for its potential therapeutic benefits. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system, connecting with receptors to regulate various physiological functions like immunity and pain responses. CBG is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, aiding conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBS). It also shows promise as an anti-anxiety agent and neuroprotectant, potentially assisting in managing conditions such as Huntington's and Parkinson's disease. Research is ongoing, but early studies suggest CBG's diverse pharmacological effects, making it an intriguing cannabinoid for future medical applications.

CBG Isolate can be found in the Duo Blends oils.

What is the difference between Broad Spectrum CBD, Full Spectrum CBD and CBD Isolate?

Broad-spectrum CBD contains a variety of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds from the hemp plant, excluding THC. Full-spectrum CBD includes all these components, including trace amounts of THC within legal limits (0.3%). On the other hand, CBD isolate is pure cannabidiol, isolated from the other cannabinoids and compounds.

Broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD are often considered more effective than CBD isolate because of something called the “entourage effect.” This theory suggests that the interaction between cannabinoids and terpenes enhances their therapeutic effects when used together. While CBD isolate offers pure cannabidiol, it may lack the potential benefits from the combined effects of various hemp compounds. Broad and full-spectrum CBD are believed to provide a more comprehensive range of potential health benefits, helping with conditions such as pain, inflammation, and anxiety, making them preferable for those seeking holistic hemp-based solutions.

Types of Carrier Oils

Hemp seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is an excellent carrier for absorbing CBD due to its optimal fatty acid profile and synergistic relationship with cannabinoids. Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, hemp seed oil enhances the bioavailability of CBD, facilitating its efficient absorption into the body. These essential fatty acids support the endocannabinoid system and contribute to overall well-being. Hemp seed oil’s composition closely resembles the lipids found in the skin, promoting better penetration and absorption of CBD through the skin barrier. Additionally, the oil is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, providing added health benefits. Its mild, nutty flavor makes it a palatable option for CBD products. The combination of these factors makes hemp seed oil a natural and effective carrier, ensuring a holistic and synergistic approach to experiencing the therapeutic effects of CBD.

MCT Oil

MCT oil derived from coconuts is an excellent carrier oil for absorbing CBD due to its unique properties. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in coconut oil enhance the bioavailability of CBD, promoting efficient absorption in the body. The MCTs, specifically caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10), act as a fast and effective delivery system for cannabinoids, facilitating their transportation across cell membranes. This aids in the more rapid and thorough absorption of CBD into the bloodstream, maximizing its therapeutic potential. Additionally, MCT oil is stable, doesn’t require special handling, and has a neutral flavor, making it a versatile and convenient choice for formulating CBD products. The combination of MCT oil’s bioavailability and compatibility with CBD contributes to its popularity as a carrier oil, ensuring that users can experience the full benefits of CBD in a well-absorbed and accessible form.

What is the difference in using Hemp Seed or MCT oil?

Hemp seed oil and MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil are both popular carriers for CBD, each with distinct characteristics. Hemp seed oil is extracted from hemp seeds and offers a nutty flavor, rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. It complements the potential health benefits of CBD, but its earthy taste may not suit everyone. On the other hand, MCT oil, often derived from coconut oil, is colorless and flavorless, providing a neutral base for CBD. MCT oil is easily digestible and metabolized, potentially enhancing the bioavailability of CBD. While hemp seed oil contributes additional nutritional elements, MCT oil is preferred by those seeking a tasteless option. The choice between the two depends on personal preferences, dietary considerations, and the desired overall experience of using CBD products.

The Essentials and Duo Blends Oils are formulated with MCT oil while the Pet line is formulated with a 50/50 blend of Hemp seed oil and MCT oil. All of the oils are safe for both human and pet consumption.

Benefits of CBD for humans and pets

CBD, or cannabidiol, offers a range of potential health benefits, primarily due to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system in the human and pet’s body. Some health benefits include:

Research suggests that CBD has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, making it beneficial for managing pain associated with conditions like arthritis or neuropathy.

CBD has demonstrated potential anti-anxiety effects, with some individuals finding relief from conditions like generalized anxiety disorder or social anxiety.

Many pet owners turn to CBD to address issues such as anxiety and stress in their animals. It’s believed to have calming effects, potentially reducing anxious behaviors in pets triggered by events like thunderstorms, fireworks, or separation from their owners.

CBD has shown promise in mitigating symptoms of epilepsy, leading to the FDA’s approval of a CBD-based medication for certain seizure disorders. Additionally, CBD may have neuroprotective properties, which could be relevant in conditions like Alzheimer’s disease or multiple sclerosis.

CBD is also known for its potential to alleviate insomnia and improve sleep quality. Some users report enhanced relaxation and reduced stress levels, contributing to better overall well-being

When CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, it is assisting all physiological functions to work at a balanced state. One of the physiological functions is immunity support. CBD can help to keep the immune system strong and provide overall well-being to humans and pets.

FAQs

Everyone (including pets) absorbs CBD differently so dosing will vary on each individual.

Humans: An ideal start for dosing would be 0.5ml twice daily of your oil of choice.

Pets: The recommended starting dose is 1mg of CBD per 1kg of weight of the cat or dog. For example, if your pet weighs 10kg, the starting dose would be 10mg of CBD. Once you know that dose, you can calculate that dose on the graduated dropper. The dose can be given at once or split up into two doses.

Use the same dose for 3-4 days and monitor your results. If there is no change, increase the dose by 0.5ml and repeat the monitoring for 3-4 days.

CBD oil takes between 15-30 minutes to absorb into the bloodstream. Some may feel the effects instantly while others may need more than one dose to experience its effectiveness.

Fun Fact: Pets are not receptive to the placebo effect, so if the CBD is working, you will notice the results.

Keep in mind, CBD is not like conventional medication where there are instant results. CBD is a supplement and needs to be taken on a daily basis for positive results. The first step to successful CBD therapy is finding the right dose and the second step is to be consistent with the dosing, using CBD daily. On average, people will see results within one to two weeks of using the product.

If you or your pet is taking different types of medication, it is important to consult your physician/veterinarian before incorporating CBD into your daily routine.

CBD oil does not have any known counterindications except for one which is with blood thinners. CBD acts as a natural blood thinner and therefore, anyone taking blood thinners should avoid using CBD. The same goes for your pets too.

To be clear, any of the above-mentioned types of CBD (Broad Spectrum, Full Spectrum, CBD Isolate, and CBG Isolate) will not make you feel high or stoned.

When taking CBD for the first time, some may feel instant calming effects while others do not feel anything at all. Taking CBD daily will help to start feeling pain relief and stress/anxiety reduction.

Some side effects that can occur for human and pets may include:

  • upset stomach (which is normally related to the carrier oil)
  • nausea or vomiting (could be because taken on an empty stomach or too much carrier oil)
  • diarrhea (taken too much)
  • Lethargy/Tiredness (taken too much)

If any of these side effects happen, reduce your dosing or discontinue use.

CBD oil either taken by a human or given to a pet is taken orally.

Humans: Fill the graduated dropper and put the oil directly under the tongue. Let the oil sit there for 30 seconds for absorption into the bloodstream. You can add your CBD oil to drinks or food as well.

Pets: Fill the graduated dropper and put the oil directly into their mouth. If you have picky pets, you can add the oil to their food, on a spoon, or onto a treat.

Fun Fact: CBD is fat soluble, so try adding CBD oil to high-fat snacks like avocado and peanut butter for high absorption.
